Formed in Basildon, England in 1980, Depeche Mode (which means "fast fashion" in French) were among the first bands of the new romantic movement to feature an entirely electronic sound--a bold move which met with incredible commercial and critical success throughout the '80s and beyond, making them one of the most successful alternative bands of their generation. The original lineup consisted of singer David Gahan, keyboardist/songwriter Vince Clarke, keyboardist/guitarist Martin Gore, and keyboardist Andrew Fletcher. Their first release, Speak and Spell (penned by Clarke) was filled with upbeat, dance-pop tunes and yielded the catchy hit "Just Can't Get Enough." Clark left the band to form Yazoo (and later on, Erasure) and Gore took over songwriting duties--a shift that would usher in the darker, more somber sound (both musically and lyrically) that would ultimately characterize the band. Another keyboard player, Alan Wilder, came aboard in 1982. Major hits in the '80s include "People are People," "Blasphemous Rumours," "Master and Servant," "But Not Tonight" and "Strangelove." Their enormous popularity continued into the '90s when they produced such memorable singles as "Policy of Truth," "Personal Jesus," "Enjoy the Silence," "It's No Good" and "Dream On." After a four year hiatus following the release of Exciter in 2001, Depeche Mode returned in 2005 with a new album Playing the Angel and a much anticipated world tour.
