Their self-released debut album Tigermilk--recorded in just three days and released on vinyl with only 1000 copies printed--became a phenomenal success, and original copies are now sought-after collectors' items. They released the critically acclaimed LP, If You're Feeling Sinister in 1996, the same year as Tigermilk. In 1997, they recorded three EPs and embarked upon a mini-tour of the south of England, as well as made their American concert debut at the CMJ (College Music Journal) festival. 2002 saw the release of their first Top Ten LP Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant and the single "Legal Man" became a Top 15 hit. Also in 2001, the group released two more EPs and recorded the soundtrack for Todd Solondz's film Storytelling. A world tour and a highly successful record, Dear Catastrophe Waitress, produced by famed '80s producer Trevor Horn gained them an even larger fanbase. The band decided to record their 2006 album, The Life Pursuit, in California. On a very interesting note, Belle & Sebastian's songs have also been the inspiration for Put The Book Back On the Shelf, a collaborative work by independent comic creators and cartoonists who've crafted stories inspired by the entire back catalog of the band's characteristic bittersweet music.
